If you build it…

This is going to sound completely random, but that is how I roll…

Does anyone remember the Kevin Costner movie, Field of Dreams? It’s a 1989 film about a farmer who hears a voice telling him: “If you build it, he will come.” Costner’s character takes this as an instruction to build a baseball pitch in his corn fields. Despite people thinking he’s crazy, he builds it anyway and a famous dead player, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and a gang of other dead baseball players emerge from the cornfields to play ball again.

Weird I know. Great film, though.

On New Years Eve I jumped on the bandwagon and posted a story to my Instagram account with a photo from every month. Then, this past week I had the chance to catch up with some good friends and spend some time with a very close friend and her gorgeous little baby. It was a great opportunity to relax, catch up and reflect on the last year with everyone. When a few different people messaged me on Instagram and when some of my friends commented that Giselle and I have had a great year, I felt a little embarrassed – but also really grateful for their encouraging words.

I’ve thought about why I felt embarrassed to receive what are ultimately lovely compliments. My initial thoughts were what did I achieve? What did I do that made it a great year?

It’s no secret that this time last year I was seriously considering selling Giselle. When it came down to it though, I had a niggling voice in the back of my head that kept asking me, “are you sure?” I realized that I felt embarrassed because had I not listened to that voice, G would be gone and I would not have had as much fun and would not made as many happy memories with her and with my friends as we did this year.

And then I thought about why I felt encouraged by their words.

Often we do not stand back and take stock of all that we have, all that we have done and all that we have achieved. This year was a great year, not because of any rosettes, but because I attempted to build on what I had, focused on what I wanted and most importantly, the possibilities of what we could achieve. My friends’ acknowledgment of this has made me feel encouraged to continue to build on all that we started last year and aim a little higher.

“You’ve had a great year.” An affirmation of how important it is to listen to the little voice.

And that’s what made me think of Field of Dreams.
